Often car parking is a critical factor in assessment of planning proposal
Whether it be the layout of a car park, provision of disabled access, access and egress, aisle widths or a multitude of other factors. Or more fundamentally it could be an issue as to definition is it an open lot car park, ancillary car park, parking station; multi- level car park or similar.
Car Park Design
Car park design needs to comply with the relevant Australian Standards with regard to angle of the car parks, their dimensions, aisle width, and access and egress provisions. Parking is more than just parking a vehicle, is it public parking, private parking, ancillary parking, off street parking or on street parking.
Impact of Car parking
Some buildings have parking facilities for use of the buildings tenants either on site, undercroft, within the building or on adjacent land. The creation of new cross overs over footpaths in high pedestrian use areas is often discouraged. Similarly in the centre of a cities CBD the creation of new parking stations and car parks is discouraged because the use of public transport is encouraged.
Licensed Premises
Restaurants and other licensed premises often require a lot of car parking based on floor space, table numbers or the number of seats. But his should be varied according to the location of the premises in the CBD or alternatively in the suburbs. Alternatively the proximity of public transport, taxi ranks or alternative public parking stations needs to be taken into account. Similarly increasing the licensed area of an existing licensed premises can create parking and other issues requiring resolution with Council and/or the Licensing Commission.
